WIGAN IN AWE OF GERRARD

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has said that he is certainly awe of Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. The inspirational captain once again played a key role in the recent 3-0 victory for Liverpool over Merseyside rivals Everton. Gerrard scored all the three goals in a match, thus getting the first hat-trick in Merseyside derby after more than half a century. Wigan will be making the trip to Anfield during the weekend knowing that they need to be at their best if they are to get anything from the match. Liverpool will be coming into the match as a wounded tiger after their 3-2 loss at the hands of QPR in the midweek action.

Liverpool lost a 2-0 advantage to QPR in the midweek action, which has put them in a difficult situation. Even though there have been no criticisms for Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish as of yet, many are expecting the axe to fall on the Liverpool legend if results do not improve up until the end of the season. The Carling cup victory alone does not seem to be the replacement for Liverpool at this stage. However, the return of Steven Gerrard is expected to inspire them to a victory at Anfield, where they have struggled for most of the season, against Wigan athletic.

“Gerrard is an outstanding footballer and I think he is more than a footballer. He represents what it means to play football and look at what he’s achieved for that football club which is quite unique. The problem you have with Liverpool is if you concentrate too much on Gerrard then you allow too much space for Suarez, Downing, Dirk Kuyt, and the list goes on,” Martinez told in the press conference ahead of the match. Wigan will be looking to get out of the relegation with a few points at Anfield.
